Obama, “Conservatives,” and Character

June 6 2008

Obama for President 2008
I’ve been contemplating a post on this very topic, but my friend Andy’s blog has a nice conversation ongoing between Obama fans (Andy and myself) and a few Obama-haters* who have yet to leave a valid email address with their comments which would, in my eyes, validate their opinions as being from, you know, Actual People.

(* I use the word ‘haters’ in describing them because telling specious lies about someone’s character while not recognizing similar traits in your own political heroes is a naked and obvious attempt at unsubstantiated character assassination)

Here’s a comment of mine from this morning :

As a former right-wing, Republican, white evangelical… I want to say that if you’re looking for a chuckle these days, Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’Reilly are going absolutely apoplectic with frustration.

Yup, I still listen in to see if where my head and heart are at these days at is wrong, or if I’ve been misled, or if I’m being too emotional and “hopeful.”

There are some in the media whose messianic view of Obama is just as revolting to me as the Right’s view of him as incompetent boob.

The last time I voted for someone’s “policies,” someone who had experience, was a business leader… he turned out to be an incompetent boob and liar.

Anyone who bought the “I’m a compassionate conservative” crap from Bush almost HAS to vote for Obama just to balance out the universe. There’s nothing remotely ‘compassionate’ about the policies he’s put in motion since being in power, and there’s definitely nothing ‘conservative’ about the incredible debt and overspending he and his cronies have been responsible for.

At least this time I’ll have voted for hope and love and a dream…. instead of voting from a place of fear and dread.

No holding back from you Dan - it’s fun to read. To make one correction though, one of the guys did leave an email address that is valid. John does seem to be at least willing to return and converse a bit, so that’s at starting point at least.

I’m enjoying the dialog. Thanks for jumping in with some info as I’m not in touch with either of the candidates “shady” connections and networks.

Ah, good to know on the Actual Person email confirmation… somehow it just doesn’t feel right when commenters don’t put a real name and link to their words. I say what I mean and stand behind it, and am more than willing to admit when I’m wrong and to be called out on any hypocrisy.

I posted back in January about some hopes I had for Obama’s rhetoric… I still hope. What I know is that the alternatives in this presidential campaign are more of the same ol’ game. The only two I see as real threats to the power structure as exists in Washington are Obama and Ron Paul. Quite a twosome.

I’d love to see Obama pick Richardson as his VP. That guy seemed sharp.

I’m honest enough to admit my admiration for Richardson is due in no small part to his refusal to be blindly loyal to the Clinton machine.

I have no idea who I like for VP, however. Waiting to see, and holding my breath.
